Zakimi Castle

Built from 1416 -1422, this was used as a gun emplacement for the Japanese before and during WWII. After the war, it was turned into a radar station by the Americans. Some walls had to be torn down in order to get the radar equipment inside, but were later restored. It was such a gorgeous day today, the kids and I did some research on places to go outside and with directions in hand, we started our adventure. Zakimi Castle is about 40 min. north of us and it offered plenty of wide open spaces to get all the wiggles out. Psst, and it's completely free. The kids had a great time running around (and not bothering anyone) and I was able to relax and enjoy the nice weather (when I wasn't pulling things out of Adam's mouth).

We even met some beautiful ladies. Mary was feeling a bit camera shy and decided to skip this photo opportunity. Oh well.
Since we were in the general area and it was getting close to lunch time, we headed over to Zanpa lighthouse (light up house, per Mary) to see the animals, eat a bite and most importantly, use the bathroom. I forgot about the massive Shisa. Here's Mary's "strong" pose. So that was our day. I think with Doug gone, we're definitely getting out and seeing more of the island. I wonder what adventure we'll have next?
