Riding In The Lap of Luxury

Today we said "Good-bye" to Adam's infant car seat and he flipped around and became a big kid. Um, bigger kid. A couple months ago, I scoped out the choices at the furniture store on base and they had 4 models to choose from. One seat was waaay too cheap in look, feel and construction. Thumbs down. One was waaay too expensive and it would only hold him up to 40 lbs. (Mary's will hold her up to 65lbs.) Thumbs down. One seat was "out of stock", so why do they even have the model on the shelf? The last choice was the newer version of Mary's, same brand, priced right in the middle of the two extremes and in black. Perfect. Did I mention this was months ago? Did you know that we live in such a place that if you see something at the Exchange that even remotely peaks your interest, you have to buy it right away or it's gone? Do you see where this is going? Today, I ran out while the kids were napping to first, give the car a good vacuuming and then to buy Adam's new seat. One seat. One...single...car seat. That's all the store had. Well, if you count the one model that's currently "out of stock", then there were two. Why is that still on the shelf? I hadn't done any research on this seat and of course, it's not the same one as Mary's. I decided to head over to Kadena (the Air Force Base- @20 min away) since they have a bigger Exchange and a bigger selection. I hit every single red light, but I was still in good spirits despite this minor set back. Kadena was packed. It is Sunday after all. Guess what I found there? One...single...car seat. The exact same one. A big waste of my time. AAARRRGGGHHH! (My frustration sounds a lot like a pirate.) They didn't have the manual to peruse, but I was able to read on the sticker on the side of the seat that it holds up to 40lbs in the five-point harness and up to 100lbs when converted to the booster. OK, I can live with that- I pretty much need to anyway, right? So I made peace with the fact that we live on a teeny, tiny island. I'm thankful that at least we were able to get him a seat at all. I can't wait to move back to the US so I can have a plethora of choices. This was one day I really missed Target and Walmart, heck, even KMart.

Daddy trying to get it adjusted before securing it in the car. Adam trying to stuff his face with a ginger apple. They're delicious!
Look! They each get something new!
Time to take it for a test drive. Daddy left his car over on Futenma (another Marine base) and we needed to go pick it up.Yea! He loves his new seat! And you just can't let a big box go to waste...

Don't forget, we're moving to a new home in 5 months! Doug said we could save a lot of money if we opt for the cardboard box version. Dumas seems to like the new place too. So as you can see, my briefly frustrating day had a happy ending and a fun night. Good night.
