When Was The Last Time You Had Some Good CLEAN Fun?

Today, we made soap.  This is a fun Pinterest project that we tried out during Mary's birthday weekend when her friend, Jessica was here.  It was so much fun and since we have used up that soap, it was time to make more.

OK, we don't technically make soap, we just change it around some.  You take a bar of Ivory soap (it has to be Ivory and no other brand.  I think it's the 99.99% pure thing.)  and you pop it in the microwave for 2 minutes.  Yes, the microwave.  It makes this really cool soap cloud.  It grows and grows and the coolest part is that each cloud looks different, kinda like real clouds.  Make sure you put wax paper underneath it, since it makes transferring from the microwave to the table much easier.  Don't worry, you won't have a mess in your microwave.  I promise.
Cool, huh?

Once you've made your clouds, it's time to have more fun.  You can tear them, smash them, pull them apart.  Basically, give the kids free range to make a mess.  There was a lot of sneezing going on at our house.  After it's smashed to smithereens, add a small amount of warm water and food coloring of choice and stir until it's a soft dough.  You can use a food processor to get it perfectly combined, but I choose to go the old fashioned route and use a spoon.  Besides, it gives it a cool marbleized look, since I can never get it perfectly mixed.

Use some of your favorite cookie cutters, play doh molds, or just your imagination and create!  You can push them out of the molds when they're still slightly damp.  I've found that the simpler the mold, the better.  The sea horse wasn't successful, but the turtle was.  The heart is the easiest (we now have lots of heart soap).

They need to fully dry for a few days in a cool dry place and then you can use them.  The kids love them in the tub.  They actually last a good long time and no, you don't have to worry about the dye rubbing off on the kids while bathing.

$1.70 for a 3 pack of Ivory soap +
1 hour (give or take) of crafting fun +
endless hours of clean fun in the tub = one of the best projects ever!

Our finished products!

Great idea! I'll have to try this with Carli & Gus next Friday, unless Laura beats me to it.
