She's asking for it
Dumas is just asking for trouble when Mary is happily playing with the empty basket and Dumas decides to jump in. I think she wants the attention. I also think she has a bad memory. She seems to forget that Mary likes to hit and pull handfuls of fur. Poor kitty.

Look how strong Mary is getting. Dumas is no lightweight so this is one way for Mary to build up her arm strength.
